From the The Broken Telegraph’s lead writer, Ian Ebright:
Even before this website began, I knew the things that I didn’t want it to become. I wasn’t interested in joining the parade of self-worship that is popular within the blogging and media communities. I wanted to avoid the trend towards simplistic, loud and needlessly divisive communication. I did not want to be just another person seeking an isolated group of like-minded individuals, so that I could provide reinforcement and some manufactured comfort. And since this site’s conception, I’ve tried to duck away from the motivational speaker phenomenon- where someone plays the role of shimmering guru and tells their audience exactly how to live or think. No matter how you look at it- this country has a void where true conversation should exist, especially between those who view the world differently.
So I asked two friends to join me by writing here. Brian, Tiffany and I do not necessarily endorse each other’s convictions or views. For example, Tiffany and I are followers of Jesus Christ, while Brian is a reverant agnostic. What we endorse is thoughtful examination, personal reflection and the ability to ask “why,” both of ourselves and about external matters. Our goal is to practice this kind of conversation, and we look forward to having you join in.
It can be argued that the pursuit of “civility above all” often becomes a tepid replacement for honesty and passionate disagreement. To that I say- absolutely, and you are welcome to hold us accountable. It is a difficult skill to walk through life without being too nice, or on the other side intense and overly earnest.
I believe that faith, love and life are made stronger when these things are tested and challenged, and that we should also get bothered and informed about issues of global injustice in order to act for positive change. If that interests you, then welcome to The Broken Telegraph.
