FROM THE SKY is the award-winning debut from Ian Ebright, with producer Jess Grant. In the narrative short film, a peaceful father and his troubled son struggle to live a nomadic life in their region of the Middle East. As drones patrol overhead, the men are forced to make difficult decisions when their camp is visited by two militants. Ian conducted extensive research, hosted an ongoing dialogue with Middle Eastern advisers throughout the screenwriting process, and cast fluent Arabic-speaking actors. The film represents a true collaboration between the writer/director, cast, crew, advisers including Oscar-nominated producer John Sinno (Iraq in Fragments), and interpreters including Syrian actor Jay Abdo (opposite Tom Hanks in A Hologram for the King).
FROM THE SKY stars Maz Siam (Argo, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Mindy Project ), Mohamad Tamimi, Steven Soro, and Georges Chalhoub. The Short Film Awards 2014 recognized Tamimi with the Best Supporting Actor award and Siam with a Best Actor nomination for their performances in the film. FROM THE SKY was also the recipient of the International Humanitarian Award Grand Prize out of 5,000 submissions and 250 screened films at the 18th annual Oscar-qualifying Rhode Island International Film Festival (2014). FROM THE SKY received 12 awards, 7 nominations, and invitations to more than 25 festivals including the Seattle International Film Festival, Savannah Film Festival, and Edmonton International Film Festival.

The production team on FROM THE SKY includes noteworthy talent. Editor Eric Frith cut prominent documentaries including A LOT LIKE YOU, FINDING HILLYWOOD, and THE HEART OF THE GAME which was distributed by Miramax and heralded as “an Oscar level piece of work” by film critic Richard Roeper. FROM THE SKY features an original score by internationally acclaimed ambient electronic artist loscil, and post-production audio work from the Emmy-winning team at Bad Animals in Seattle, whose recent credits include director Lynn Shelton’s film LAGGIES starring Keira Knightley and Sam Rockwell.
In July 2016, FROM THE SKY had its television debut on PBS’ Seattle affiliate KCTS 9. The same month, the film streamed on the SIFF Selects channel for Alaska Airlines’ in-flight entertainment, as well as on PBS.org and KCTS9.org. Throughout its lengthy festival circuit run, FROM THE SKY received coverage in MovieMaker Magazine and Al Arabiya, was nominated for Video of the Week on Awardeo.tv, and was featured on Film Shortage and ILoveShortFilms.com.

THE DEVIL NEEDS A FIX is a new short film from Ian’s eleventh screenplay. In this dramatic dark comedy, an ambivalent reporter will get a big break if his interview with the Devil goes as planned. THE DEVIL NEEDS A FIX is an unconventional look at disconnectedness, longing, and the nature of fear.
The film reunites Ian with FROM THE SKY award-winning producer Jess Grant, editor Eric Frith, actor Steven Soro, and assistant director Ian Van der Werff. THE DEVIL NEEDS A FIX also stars Stefan Hajek (SXSW Audience Award winner Eden, Dawson’s Creek) and Rosalie Miller (SyFy’s Z Nation). The film is populated with music from the Hensinki-based band Husky Rescue (HBO’s The Sopranos, SXSW, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Glastonbury), including new music written for the film.
