THE WAY WE SPEAK 2024
drama | writer-director, producer
Ian’s first feature-length film is a cautionary tale starring 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Patrick Fabian, who played tragic lawyer Howard Hamlin for six seasons of Better Call Saul. In The Way We Speak, Fabian plays an up-and-coming writer who refuses to leave the spotlight at an annual thought-leader summit after his best friend and debate opponent suffers cardiac arrest—leading to an obsession over the writer’s new opponent and a growing rift with his ailing wife. Drafts of The Way We Speak placed in screenwriting contests including WeScreenplay and BlueCat from Sundance alum Gordy Hoffman.
Diana Coconubo, Kailey Rhodes, Ayanna Berkshire, Lowell Deo, Ricco DiStefano, and Reed Diamond round out the diverse ensemble cast. Since the start of principal photography on The Way We Speak, Better Call Saul won a Peabody award and three trophies at the 2023 Critics’ Choice Awards; the acclaimed series also received five Emmy nominations; Ayanna Berkshire starred with Daisy Ridley in Sometimes I Think About Dying which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival; and Berkshire’s other recent film New Life premiered at the 2023 Fantasia Film Festival.
Principal photography wrapped in early 2023 in Portland, Oregon. The film’s crew includes Producer Molly Vendettuoli, Director of Photography A.J. Marson, Production Designer Jeff Stillwell, and Costume Designer Erin Toft. The postproduction team reunites Ian with Sound Designer Brendan J. Hogan (SXSW award-winning feature Prospect) and Composer Billow Observatory—comprised of Denmark’s Jonas Munk (Manual) and Detroit’s Jason Kolb (Auburn Lull). Long-time Francis Ford Coppola collaborator Robert Schafer edited The Way We Speak. Schafer’s editing credits include Coppola’s Megalopolis and Apocalypse Now Final Cut.
Deadline was first to announce The Way We Speak and had the trailer’s exclusive premiere.
